Diminished 7th Arpeggios: Building from the Root

Lesson Material

Another strategy I like to use to find the right diminished 7th arpeggio over and dominant 7th chord is by building from the root. We can use a similar method as our diminished 7th arpeggio idea from the previous chapter but this time travelling from the root:

These naturally resolve to a chord tone of the D major 7, whether you’re playing standard or pivot arpeggios:

With these two strategies – visualising the major 3rd or building from the root – you can cover a lot of ground in terms of spelling out strong diminished harmony over any dominant 7th chord.

We’ll come back to these two concepts a lot throughout Module 3, so it’s a good idea to spend some quality practice time navigating around the neck until you feel comfortable. Definitely try this out over the backing track, as it will force you to see the shape and make the resolution in time.

In the next lesson, we’ll put this into some concrete musical practice, but this time resolving to a D minor chord.
