Performance: One String Solo

Lesson TAB

Lesson Material

This one string solo concept is a great practice tool that you could easily shift onto other strings if you wanted to take it a bit further. Here we’re dealing with the Bb H/W Diminished scale on the high E string over a Bb7(#9) backing:

Diminished scale on the high E string

There should be a general sense of gravity to the root Bb at the 6th fret, but experiment and listen carefully to the flavour of each note.

For this solo I was thinking blues/pentatonic (we’ll deal with how this fits in with the diminished in future lessons) and seeing/hearing the extra notes around it for more tension. I was also trying to use some of the finger permutations that I mention in the lesson.

All of these techniques will help shift you out of the mindset of playing predictable shape-based ideas.
